Pottery from Buño and lace works from Camariñas ("rendas" or "encaixe", in Galician) are the most popular craftmanships in the region.
The pottery industry had a tradition of centuries. The techniques used were modernized in the XVII century, when the pottery from Buño began to be recognized throughout the country.
Rendas or Encaixe (lace work) from Camariñas, the most famous ones, and from other places in the region, were an extra income for humble families. The manufacure of this lace work set the pace for girls and women during the autumn and the winter. They used to get together to work and teach the younger ones the knowndlege needed to make the delicate lace patterns. These places were the socializing centres of many villages.
Camariñas City Council has more detailed information about the lace work.
Sancosmeiros are traditional straw hats. They are still used by older rural women to protect themselves from the sun. You will have the chance to see them while visiting the countryside.
