It was built around the XIV century, on top of an older fortress from the XII or XIII century. It was used to control the Valley of Vimianzo.

It was destroyed during the Irmandiños Riots (a low nobility and peasant movement against the nobility and the church), between 1467 and 1469. The bishop Alonso Fonseca II made the Irmandiños themselves rebuild it, after they were defeated.

Nowadays you will find workshops of handcrafts inside the castle during the summer. In july it is celebrated an assault, acomppained by food, wine and music. It recalls the Irmadiños Riots.

Not too long from there you can see Pazo de Trasariz, from the XVII century.
